Zcash vs Bitcoin in 2026: Supply, Privacy, Speed and the Barry Silbert Thesis Explained

Quick answer
Zcash started in 2016 as a fork of Bitcoin’s code, so the two share a 21-million coin cap, proof-of-work mining, and a halving schedule. They differ in three places. Bitcoin’s ledger is fully transparent, while Zcash lets users choose between transparent and shielded transactions that hide the sender, receiver, and amount. Bitcoin targets a block every 10 minutes with SHA-256 mining; Zcash uses Equihash with 75-second blocks today and 25-second blocks after the NU7 upgrade expected around 5 November 2026. Bitcoin has no protocol-level development fund; Zcash directs 20% of each block reward to ecosystem funding. In February 2026, Digital Currency Group founder Barry Silbert argued that 5% to 10% of Bitcoin’s capital could move into privacy-focused coins such as Zcash over the next few years. That is one investor’s thesis, and his group owns the sponsor of the Zcash ETF, so readers should treat it as a position rather than a forecast.

Same roots, different ledgers
Zcash was built on Bitcoin’s codebase by cryptographers who wanted to add what Bitcoin lacks: a way to transact without publishing every balance and payment to the world. Bitcoin addresses are pseudonymous, which means they are not tied to a name by default, but every transaction is visible, and analytics firms routinely link addresses to identities.
Zcash keeps transparent addresses for public transfers and also supports shielded receivers backed by zero-knowledge proofs. The privacy obtained depends on the transaction path: shielded-to-shielded transfers can hide sender, receiver, and amount, while transfers between transparent and shielded pools reveal some boundary information on-chain. Zcash privacy is therefore optional and strongest when value remains within the shielded pool.
Supply and issuance
Both networks cap supply at 21 million and halve the block reward roughly every four years. Bitcoin’s most recent halving, in April 2024, cut the reward to 3.125 BTC. Zcash’s second halving, on 23 November 2024, cut its reward to 1.5625 ZEC.
The difference is where the coins go. Every newly mined bitcoin goes to the miner. Since November 2024, Zcash sends 80% of each block reward to miners, 8% to the Zcash Community Grants program and 12% to a protocol-controlled lockbox. Supporters call this sustainable funding for a cryptography-heavy protocol; critics call it a tax that Bitcoin never needed.
NU7 adds a twist on the Zcash side. From around 5 November 2026, blocks arrive every 25 seconds instead of every 75, so per-block issuance is adjusted to keep the halving schedule intact, and 60% of each block’s transaction fees are removed from circulation for reissuance to miners starting around February 2031.
Speed and confirmations
Bitcoin confirms a block roughly every 10 minutes, so a transfer that needs several confirmations typically settles within an hour. Zcash’s 75-second blocks mean a handful of confirmations takes a few minutes; after NU7, the same number of confirmations takes about a quarter of that time. Faster blocks are not free: they produce more orphaned blocks and more chain data per day, which is one reason Bitcoin has kept its 10-minute target since 2009.
Security track record
Bitcoin did experience an inflation bug: on 15 August 2010, block 74,638 briefly created about 184.47 billion BTC through an integer-overflow flaw. Patched software rejected the transaction, and the network reorganized it out. It is therefore inaccurate to say Bitcoin has never experienced a counterfeiting or inflation failure.
Zcash has also had major counterfeiting/soundness vulnerabilities. The Sprout proving-system flaw disclosed in 2019 had already been fixed in Sapling. On 29 May 2026, Taylor Hornby, working for Shielded Labs, found a critical Orchard flaw; Orchard was temporarily disabled and the corrected NU6.2 circuit activated on 3 June. Ironwood activated on 28 July with a separate value pool and turnstile that prevents hypothetical counterfeit Orchard value from escaping beyond legitimate inflows. Shielded Labs found no evidence of exploitation, but the shielded design means that cannot be proved retrospectively. ZEC sold off sharply after disclosure.
The honest comparison is a trade-off. Bitcoin offers simplicity and an unmatched record of protocol stability. Zcash offers a capability Bitcoin does not have, at the cost of a larger and younger cryptographic surface.
Market structure and the Barry Silbert thesis
In 2025 ZEC rose about 853% while Monero gained about 123%, according to Benzinga, making privacy coins the year’s standout category. On 11 February 2026, at Bitcoin Investor Week, Barry Silbert told Anthony Pompliano: “The bet we’re making is 5%-10% of Bitcoin over the next few years is going to find its way into privacy-focused cryptocurrencies,” naming Zcash as an example, as reported by The Block.
Two facts belong next to that quote. First, Silbert’s Digital Currency Group owns Grayscale, whose Zcash Trust converted into the Grayscale Zcash ETF (ticker ZCSH) on NYSE Arca on 25 August 2026, with a 2.5% fee, as reported by The Block. DCG also owns Foundry, which announced a Zcash mining pool in March 2026, according to Benzinga. Second, the thesis has not been tested by time: Silbert framed it as a multi-year bet, and ZEC’s 50% drop after the Orchard disclosure showed how quickly sentiment can reverse.
EU AML rules add a constraint for privacy assets. From 10 July 2027, Article 79 of Regulation (EU) 2024/1624 prohibits crypto-asset service providers from keeping anonymous crypto-asset accounts or accounts that allow anonymization or increased transaction obfuscation, including through anonymity-enhancing coins. That is more precise than saying the EU simply ‘bans privacy coins’: the rule targets obliged entities and their services, not individual ownership of ZEC.
Which one is right for you
This is not investment advice, and the choice depends on what you need the asset to do.
- You want the deepest liquidity, the longest track record and the widest acceptance: that describes Bitcoin.
- You want the option to transact without publishing amounts and counterparties on a public ledger, and you accept a more complex protocol and a changing regulatory picture: that describes Zcash.
- Many holders keep both and move between them as needs change.
Stefan Lauer, Head of Infrastructure at SimpleSwap, described the wider debate in the CryptoSlate guide on self-custody: “The cypherpunks won the argument about ownership. The least we can do is finish the sentence.” Bitcoin settled the ownership question. Zcash is one of several projects trying to finish the sentence on privacy.
