EVM Has Come To Zilliqa Mainnet
This blog post will cover:
- Some background
- Story behind the launch
- Zilliqa’s going through changes
- To be continued
Back in winter 2022, Zilliqa made a noteworthy announcement regarding its testnet. Specifically, the team implemented EVM compatibility on this platform. Just a couple of days ago, on 25th of April, it was introduced on the mainnet.
What else has changed for Zilliqa? In this Blog post we will observe the update.
Some background
Zilliqa is a blockchain network established in 2017. It operates in a public and permissionless environment, aiming to provide a high level of throughput by enabling thousands of transactions per second. The platform addresses the problem of scalability and speed that often plagues blockchain networks by utilizing sharding, which acts as a secondary layer scaling solution.
A key element of the platform is a token, ZIL, utilized to proceed operations and perform smart contracts.
A detailed project overview is in our previous Blog post.
Story behind the launch
The EVM is a software platform that serves as the foundation for creating apps on Ethereum or any other protocols with an executed EVM compatibility.
After testing, compatibility was finally placed on the testnet. This initial launch delivered a few features, including the opportunity to natively transfer ZIL without requiring complicated convert processes.
Moving forward, the work on EVM is continuing, its functionality is increasing. As for the current roll-out, it changed a lot on the platform adding some fresh features. Here’s what the project’s CTO, Richard Watts says:
Zilliqa’s going through changes
EVM brought some brand new opportunities to the project. Let’s briefly see the updates:
- Interoperability between Scilla & SolidityThis feature allows the transfer of ZIL with the same ease as the move of NFTs and fungible tokens.
- Building EVM apps on the platformDevs familiar with EVM development can easily deploy their applications on Zilliqa with powerful sharding infrastructure and low transaction fees. Due to it, their DApps can operate faster and more efficiently.
- Guarding users’ comfortThe update gives customers a chance to utilize wallets such as MetaMask with the Zilliqa.
- Supporting API librariesEVM compatibility provides vast support for API libraries (Ethers.js and Web3.js).

In the Medium post, it was revealed that the project has set big goals for the future. With the implementation of EVM compatibility, Zilliqa becomes a major player in the DeFi sphere, and hopefully will be able to collaborate with other key members of the crypto industry.
The team is focused on network upgrades and the path towards a more scalable and user-friendly network with Zilliqa 2.0. While speed and expandability are important, improving user experience is considered to be a top goal. Ensuring that users can easily adopt and utilize the network is crucial. After all, a scalable network that no one uses is pointless.
The team is focused on improving the network's scalability and user-friendliness with Zilliqa 2.0, all while keeping user experience as their main priority.
